Enemy of the people

Discuss the following In 600 – 800 substantive (thoughtful, insightful) and well written words:
Examine the theme in Ibsen’s “Enemy of the People” that the moral success of one agent seems to require the moral failure of another.  Focus on how Thomas Stockman’s obligation and oath as a medical doctor to “do no harm” conflicts with his role as a member of the governing board of the Baths.  Focus also on Peter Stockman’s special moral requirement as mayor to the welfare of the community.  Be sure to address how the community’s interests and familial obligations are also factors competing for moral relevancy.  Finally, synthesize the play with at least two of the articles linked in the unit: Flint, MI; Kentucky; Blue Bell; Tylenol, etc.  Conclude with what you believe should have been done regarding the contaminated baths, and explain why in in terms of ethics.  What kind of parallels can you draw between the moral competition in the play and that which we see playing out right now regarding the coronavirus pandemic?  Consider the competition of public health v. economic health.  Compare and contrast that competition in both the play and in reality today.  What should be done?  As with Disc 1, you do not have to address all of the above in your Discussion-essay; in fact, don’t try.  But you should address the spirit of the topic with a tight focus on two or three primary sub-topics.  Remember to use specific textual evidence to illustrate and exemplify and thus develop your writing.  Don’t be vague; prove what you say.  Remember that you are trying to situate all of these readings within a context of Moral Relativism.  Also, aptly integrate at least two additional sources from the chapter into your submission.

Sub-topics to consider when brainstorming your writing:

Various discourse communities/stakeholders involved in the play and in real-life (families, city, region, occupation [medical, government])
Public Health
Economic Health
Obligation and Duty
Consequentialism
