Q: explain the relationship between horror and travel. You should consider the implications of journeying from civilization and into wilderness when answering this question
* You have to write 6-8 paragraphs + Introduction+ conclusion and you have to add types of violence, generation, phallic and yonic symbol in essay.
* (Remember, you could do this same breakdown as regeneration if a character who is other connects to passion but regenerates back towards civilization you would have to explain why re: types of violence used/ symbolic vs. literal/legitimate vs. illegitimate)
* Movies are:
1)The Girl with All the Gifts movie directed by Colm McCarthy and written by Mike Carey.
2) Rise of the Planet of the Apes movie directed by Rupert Wyatt
* . Relationship between horror and travel the journey from civilization into the wilderness. Characters start off in civilization, frequently as members of the establishment, and start moving into forbidden spaces or encountering forbidden knowledge as they move deeper into the wilderness. Often, by the end of their journey, characters end up too degenerated to return back to civilization as a member of the establishment. If they do not die in the wilderness or go insane, they return back as other.
One definition I gave of Forbidden Knowledge is the knowledge of Creation the Knowledge of God the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge from the Garden of Eden that Adam and Eve eat and cause their fall (their degeneration from their original self to something other that is now unfit for civilization and must wander in the wilderness) this type of forbidden knowledge is found in horror and science texts such as Frankenstein, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Deep Blue Sea, and Splice.
* Forbidden Knowledge also can be the knowledge of supernatural places/spaces and or supernatural creatures this idea relates to horror and travel and the journey from civilization to wilderness. The texts that relate to this definition of forbidden knowledge that we have studied
The Rats in the Walls journey is metaphorical/symbolic as the narrator moves from the civilization of the house to the liminal space of the cellar to the twilight area and finally the midnight area (wilderness) pay attention to the light and darkness images as they symbolize the movement from civilization (light) to twilight (in-between light and darkness) to midnight (pure darkness no light and therefore no connection to civilization).
Frankenstein the latter part as Frankenstein moves from civilization to the wilderness in his chase of the monster which ends in Frankensteins mental, moral, emotional, and physical degeneration as he becomes too connected to passion and eventually dies in the wilderness as other. A more complicated argument might be that Frankenstein continually retreats to wilderness or liminal spaces as he keeps his labs (his filthy workplaces of creation in liminal spaces) but that would be a very, very difficult and sophisticated argument to make.
Sredni Vashtar could examine either Mrs. DeRopps journey from the civilization of the house to the wilderness (liminal space) of the garden shed where she is killed by a pagan god/monster/other OR you could look at Conradins movement from civilization to the wilderness/liminal space of the garden shed where he connects to the power of the other through his imagination (liminal space) and uses this imagination to create a weapon (his pagan god) to use to attack and overthrow the establishment (indirectly). In this case, the others movement from civilization to wilderness makes him or her more powerful because he or she connects to the power of wilderness/passion. They use this passion to invade/attack/attempt to overthrow the establishment/civilization.
Splice (mainly intended for horror and science/rise of the other/ monstrous-feminine/deadly sins/social taboos/ but I will have posted more specific lecture notes on Splice)
The Girl with All the Gifts the fall of civilization forces Melanie to leave civilization as she and the other normal humans wander in the wilderness/encounter the monsters (Hungries)/ the other. Melanie moves between connecting to the establishment/other until at the end she has a chance 2of rebuilding civilization and humanity (the establishment) OR of allowing the other to rise in power and overthrow the establishment and form a new version of civilization.
You would probably need 6 body paragraphs to do this analysis effectively plus an introduction and conclusion which would make this essay 8 paragraphs in total. For this essay, you will use subject-bysubject formatting which has indirect comparison and contrast done when you start analyzing the second text. One basic way of breaking down this essay question (although you have to think critically about how to incorporate this idea according to the texts you choose) is the following.
Possible Breakdown for the Essay (although you have to think critically about how to incorporate this idea according to the texts you choose) is the following:
First text (must be different than the second text):
BP1. Explain and analyze the warning signs the main character ignores (could flesh out analysis as due to Pride/Curiosity) as he/she crosses the boundary between civilization and wilderness. Explain what the character should have realized from the warning signs re: the dangers ahead and why he/she does not pay attention or understand the warnings. (You could connect back to what the establishment believes vs. the other re: logic vs. passion/superstition or how the establishment transmits knowledge vs. the other re: books/writing vs. gossip, art, and superstition).
BP2. Analyze what happens when the main character encounters the other and connects to passion in order to survive often a kill or be killed situation in which the character is blooded (ritual act of killing that causes blood to be an agent of transformation in which a character is reborn as the monster in order to survive). If the character is other, this action will probably show a character connects to passion but become more powerful enough to attack the establishment or civilization. You could look at how the character kills re: yonic/phallic symbols or high tech/low tech weapons or efficiently and logically or sadistically or passionately. You could bring in the idea of degeneration and include how violence is committed as part of secondary argument.
BP3. Analyze the characters last significant action and explain whether the character will have trouble returning to civilization or will destroy civilization and form a new version of civilizationdoes the character to go insane/ die/ become too other to return to civilization as a member of the establishment. If the character is other, depending on how much violence is used (symbolic/indirect or literal violence and whether the violence is done for legitimate or illegitimate purposes), the character may die in the wilderness (Dren from Splice) or overthrow the establishment (Conradin/Melanie) and become the new establishment. Ultimately, you will explain what the consequences of learning this forbidden knowledge will have on the character.
Second text (must be different than the first text):
BP4. Start off by making an indirect comparison or contrast to the first character in the first text. Ex. Similar to/ Similarly/ Unlike/ In contrast to the first character, the second character. (You would use the actual characters names and not call them first character or second character). Explain and analyze the warning signs the second main character ignores (could flesh out analysis as due to Pride/Curiosity) as he/she crosses the boundary between civilization and wilderness. Explain what the character should have realized from the warning signs re: the dangers ahead and why he/she does not pay attention or understand the warnings. (You could connect back to what the establishment believes vs. the other re: logic vs. passion/superstition or how the establishment transmits knowledge vs. the other re: books/writing vs. gossip, art, and superstition).3
BP5. You could start off by making an indirect comparison or contrast to the first character if it makes logical sense. Ex. Similar to/ Similarly/ Unlike/ In contrast to. Analyze what happens when the second main character encounters the other and connects to passion in order to survive often a kill or be killed situation in which the character is blooded (ritual act of killing that causes blood to be an agent of transformation in which a character is reborn as the monster in order to survive).

Ultimately, you will explain what the consequences of learning this forbidden knowledge will have on the character. Since this is your last body paragraph, make sure to compare or contrast the two characters in the last sentence or two in order to connect your points back to your secondary argument.
Possible secondary argument could be degeneration which causes the main character to become other or regeneration if the main character starts off as other but manages to reconnect back to civilization or form a whole new version of civilization at the end.
Types of Degeneration
Physical degeneration- the character could become physically ill, run a fever, his/her physical body breaks down or transforms into something more other, could be in a coma etc.
Mental degeneration the character starts to think with passion not logic, hallucinates, or starts to go insane
Emotional degeneration the character becomes depressed, hysterical, acts too much from passion
Spiritual degeneration/moral degeneration the character demonstrates immoral acts and loses his/her sense of goodness/ does things that are consider wrong/taboo/ against the morals and values of civilization such as murder, cannibalism, bestiality, necrophilia etc.
