Samir Cooper case study –>  Samir was a counselor in a youth detention facility. He had extensive training in administering and interpreting many achievement and psychological measures. Cooper was a 16- year- old boy with a record of arrests for shoplifting, possession of illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia, and assault. Cooper had lived as a ward of the state, in foster care, since he was 4. While in the facility, Cooper got into a serious altercation with two other boys, resulting in Cooper getting knocked unconscious. Following this incident, Cooper began having seizures, and sometimes, during conversations, seemed to lose touch with reality. His hygiene deteriorated, and he became withdrawn and even more irritable than he had been before the fight. The seizures were successfully managed medically. Samir was asked to give Cooper some rather routine testing to determine his learning needs and potential. Cooper was cooperative and mildly interested in the process, and told Samir he wanted to know the results.
After scoring the instruments, Samir was surprised to find that Cooper’s scores indicated a sharp decline in intellectual functioning, as compared to earlier group scores from his school. In addition, Cooper had endorsed a number of items that suggested magical thinking and odd or bizarre ideation. Imagine the clinical and ethical concerns Samir would consider before meeting with Cooper and his guardian to go over the test results. What further testing might be appropriate? With what other professionals might Samir consult?
