Isaiah’s Servant Songs

On page 101 of ECS, there is a brief discussion of the “servant songs” of Isaiah.  In 500 words, discuss what the servant songs are and how they are important in Isaiah 40-55.  Also discuss the various options for interpreting the songs, in particular noting discussion of who the servant is. 
ECS does not include enough information for you to write this essay well.  You will need to include at least TWO outside sources in your discussion and note any ideas and quotations you take from these sources.  At the end of the cited material, simply cite the author and the page number in parenthesis: e.g., “Frederick Graham argues that . . .” (Graham, 47).  If there is no page number, simply note the author in parentheses.
Some acceptable sources are:

Print commentaries or Bible studies
Online commentaries or Bible studies
Blogs that are written by scholars (people teaching at a college, university, or seminary)
Journals (you can access them through the library; many are online)

Some unacceptable sources are:

Wikipedia or similar open-source websites
Blogs not written by a scholar
Sermons (sermons are not usually academic in nature and do not necessarily fully discuss the type of background material you will need)
Sermon notes (the pastor has usually compiled these notes from the kinds of sources noted above)
