Simulation-Based Technologies to Augment Education and Training

For those interested in systems and processes, simulation can also improve system performance and outcomes (Lee & Papanagnou, 2019). In situ simulation also offers the opportunity to better understand and appreciate the work environment, and reinforce teamwork and communication behaviors which are essential to high-reliability health care teams. High-Reliability Emergency Response Teams
Wheeler, D.S., Geis, G., Mack, E.H., LeMaster, T., & Patterson, M.D. (2013). High-reliability emergency response teams in the hospital: Improving quality and safety using in situ simulation training. BMJ Quality & Safety, 22, 507-514.
In situ simulation training was conducted on actual patient care units using equipment and resources from the units as well as the members of the health care teams. The article describes the in situ simulation training experience in a children’s medical center.

Nursing Response to In-Hospital Cardiac Arrest Events
Adcock, S., Kuszajewski, M.L., Dangerfield, C., & Muckler, V.C. (2020). Optimizing nursing response to in-hospital cardiac arrest events using in situ simulation. Clinical Simulation in Nursing, 49, 50-57.
A baseline 5-minute cardiac arrest simulation was conducted on a nursing unit. Time to interventions and quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation by nurses was measured to improve Basic Life Support trained nursing staff responses to in-hospital cardiac arrests at a academic teaching hospital.

Disaster Preparedness in the ED
Jung, D., Carman, M., Aga, R., & Burnett, A. (2016). Disaster preparedness in the Emergency Department using in situ simulation. Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal, 38(1), 56-68.
A situ simulation was conducted in an Emergency Department to examine whether in situ simulation increase health care providers’ knowledge of how to perform during a disaster, improve competency in skills related to those actions, and improve communication regarding the special circumstances inherent to a disaster in the ED.
