I currently work in a Neuro ICU unit and we are constantly looking for ways to decrease length of stay of patients and infection occurrences and improve patient overall satisfaction. An issue that has come to our attention in the last months was the consistent use of Foley catheters and its relationship to the frequency of catheter associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI). We have now implemented various guidelines including a nurse driven protocol that requires daily review of catheter necessity. The question that still remains using the PICOT method as described in our text is: P-In ICU patients, I-how effective is it to remove Foley catheters within 24-72 hours in preventing infection, C- versus intermittent catheterization in O-decreasing the incidence of infection T-within 90 days?
